St. Edward the Confessor
Feast Day: October 13 Edward was born at the beginning of the 11th century. He ruled from 1042 until his death in 1066. He was instrumental in the building of Westminster Abbey, and his body is buried there. Edward was well known for his devout faith, prayerfulness, and gentle character. He was also known for his kindness and generosity toward the poor - giving alms and cancelling unjust taxes. Many miracles were attributed to him both during his life and after death. Because of this, he was canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1161. He is given the title 'Confessor' to signify his holy life. He did not die a martyr, so confessor emphasized his piety and devotion. St. Edward is the patron saint of England, kings, difficult marriages, and separated spouses. |
